Motoki Morinaga and one of his students play tsugaru shamisen (or tsugaru-jamisen) which is a different instrument from the regular shamisen.

The pieces played with tsugaru shamisen are fast and with many different parts. Don’t know if it’s right to say this, but sometimes I feel like I’m listening to a heavy metal guitar solo.

A very peculiar sound of the tsugaru shamisen is that of the bachi (pick) hitting the body every time a string is played. Could we say this is a percussion instrument apart of a string one?

Today’s artists are young master Motoki Morinaga on the left, and one of his students on the right. They were playing at Kego Park when Micaela and I went there to practice our dance. By the way Motoki Morinaga is also a professional at other traditional Japanese arts like kabuki and nagauta, as you can read on his official web site.
