Presentada Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo just issued today a press release (PDF) announcing they will be selling the Nintendo DS’s successor, provisionally called the Nintendo 3DS. It will be a DS-compatible machine that will show 3D graphics without need of special glasses.

For now it doesn’t add anything that interests me, but I was waiting for this announcement! Although I was thinking it would be out this year. You know I hate 3D, but what I actually hate is 3D on a regular 2D screen. If the 3DS shows real 3D like the Virtual Boy, it’s welcome. And if Nintendo’s market share keeps its pace, I think we will see non-3D games as well –like we see games without touchscreen control for the DS.

But I don’t think I’d be able to forgive if they used disks or other slow reading media. We already got a big reading speed cut if you compare the GameBoy Advance and the DS. Please use cartridges all the way! It’s no excuse to say they need optical disks for more space for games. Videos aren’t needed and don’t count. And download sales getting bigger should help developers cut in space waste. But I don’t think the machine will be download-only. Nntendo is known for putting special chips in games themselves, like when they started using motion sensors in Game Boy Color cartridges, or when they put an infrared port on the latest Pokemon to have it transfer data to the PokeWalker. You can’t do that just with download sale. Please sell 3DS games in cartridge and download form!
