I still had something to say about Orio Matsuri. In the evening there was a live performance by the Wet Beans, who are a Beatles copy band and really good at it.

They said they had a lot of ballads planned for the night, but they felt such fun in the audience that they changed the set on the fly to play more danceable rock’n roll and pop. This is thanks to the very drunk Okinawan dances guys and girls!

The concert was so fun that it felt a lot shorter than it really was. By the way, they have uploaded pictures to their homepage! I’m the guy in pink over there.

Last Saturday at Orio Matsuri before meeting Carlos, I joined a particular (but typical) quiz. The rules were simple: You listen to a supposed fact, and you have to go to the «O» zone if you think it’s true, or to the «X» zone if you think it’s false. People in the wrong answer zone lose the game and can’t play any further.

quiz

The first questions were quite easy, being the names of the guy and girl asking the questions (who had just introduced themselves to us), but the following questions weren’t as cheap. An example of a question is «Sazae-san’s house doesn’t have a second floor», referring Sazae-san, one of the longest-running TV series in history.

quiz

¡Pues no!

And the second picture shows the field when the question was «in Japan, one can attend nursery school until one is 18 years old». As you can see, most of us answered «false». But it was actually true! Only a few people were left after this question.

Last Saturday I was invited by Carlos from lostinjapan.info to the Orio festival, which is held in the town where he studies in Kitakyushu. It’s a very quiet and inspiring place.

Just as I walked out of the station at 3pm, after 1 hour of train riding, I saw the people in the above photo. They were rehearsing for the Okinawan dance they’d be performing at the festival’s main stage later at 5pm.

The guy in blue on the right is playing a sanshin, Okinawa’s shamisen. They both have 3 strings, a small box, a a fretless mast. But the sanshin has its box made of snake skin, and it’s supposed to be played with a pick made of cow horn.

At 5 pm I had already met Carlos, and while we waited for a friend of his to make some tacos, we watched the Okinawan dances. It felt like a very natural and party thing, and I couldn’t think of it as a performance. They were having a lot of fun.

The guys with the big drums and the guys playing sanshin were up on the stage. And there were a pair of weirdos walking all around the dancing area, with their faces painted, different clothes and, most important, a big bottle of wheat shochu (maybe Okinawan awamori was too expensive?).
