Japoneschan

Japoneschan

The last weeks I’ve been updating the blog less than usual because I was busy with a little project. Do you remember nombrejapones? I made that Twitter service so that people could search how to write their Spanish names in Japanese characters. Seeing it was a success (it soon had more Twitter followers than myself) and I enjoyed making it too, I decided to make it bigger, with services interesting to Japanese people too. I also had it use external services like Google Translate or the Japanese-Spanish dictionary Hispadic (Spanish translation of EDICT).

Japoneschan

  • Internet Explorer

The name is Japoneschan, and I hope you like our mascot. I think it expresses some traits of the service – he can write Spanish into katakana in an almost magic way, but he isn’t actually understanding what’s written (there’s Google Translate for that). Design is by Koga Takahiro, a good friend of mine who is also in charge of the design for Escucha español. We hope you find it useful and have fun playing with it! Thanks to all our friends who helped testing, and two more things before finishing:

  • It doesn’t look good on Internet Explorer so be warned.
  • Japoneschan also has a blog where we write about fun ways to use the service.

Tu nombre en japonés

Have you ever wanted to convert a name –or any other Spanish word for that matter– to Japanese characters? You only have to send a tweet to @nombrejapones with your Spanish name, like in the picture below.

After a while you’ll get a reply with your name (as it reads in Spanish) written in katakana characters like the one you can see below. @nombrejapones is a Botize bot which uses a plugin I programmed last night to try the API.

Botize is a platform for people to make bots (automate tasks) on Twitter, and it won an important prize in top class Spanish event Campus Party. To thank their users, Botize creator @savermsx organized a plugin contest to add new features to the site. I’m entering with @nombrejapones, and I’d like to win that iPad. If you find my plugin interesting, please make Botize know. Follow @nombrejapones, ask some katakana names, or just tweet about it. I’ll appreciate it a lot! Below is a video for the Campus Party prizes ceremony.

El mundial y yo

I’m Spanish but I’m not interested in soccer at all. There are a lot of soccer (football) haters in Spain, but when one says «I’m Spanish» in Japan there’s a high probability that someone says «I love soccer!». Well I’m sorry to deceive you but I don’t like soccer. I like heavy metal! But we made some world cup themed videos anyway. Which one do you like best?

Entrevista: Escucha japonés (2ª parte)

This is the last part of the video interviews Urías took with us. Today we are talking (in Spanish) about what we have achieved with Escucha japonés. And there’s a hint of something in the end, but what could it be? What does TLQM mean?
