Renovar el pasaporte

I guess all Spaniards living in Japan have got a letter from the Embassy, but starting on October 21th one can’t renew passports anymore at the consulates. Unless one’s younger than 12 years old, that is. By the way, if you’re under 12 this post can be very boring so I’d suggest watching videos of people dancing.

It was a big enough pain to go to the Consulate to apply for a passport renewal, but now we’ll have to go all the way to Tokyo just to have our fingerprints taken. The passport itself can be taken at the Consulate, though. I haven’t been to the Consulate except to renew my passport, and I feel it could become a more useful place. Too bad it has just become a less useful place. I think I’ll renew my passport when I go to Spain. Was this their purpose?

Declaración de la renta

Monday 16th March is the last day for submitting the tax declaration in Japan. I tried to do it by the internet two days ago with Ai’s much needed help, but we failed to complete it properly. So yesterday I went to a place where the tax office guys help you with your declaration and it was all very smooth. At the end the declaration looked like this (made up data).

This second document is «the blue declaration» something freelance people can do in order to get more taxes back (again with fictional data). By the way this must be submitted in paper.

And we foreign nationals also have to submit this paper. Note you have to answer questions like «Date of original entry to Japan» and other things you probably don’t know. Fortunately it seems to be OK if you write whatever at those questions.

I learnt a lot, and I was impressed by the fact that you can know how much of your withheld taxes are coming back, and when they’re coming back, all of this at the moment you hand the declaration over.

A por el carnet de conducir japonés

Last year I got a translation of my driving license so that I can get my Japanese license, but I didn’t use this translation until today.

Fukuoka’s Driving License Examination Center is quite far from the center and it took me almost 30 minutes on the highway. Actually more like under the highway, on my bike. The road was very well prepared for bicycles, which is not usual here.

With my Spanish license and the translation I got from the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), as well as some other usual documents, I am able to get my Japanese license. But depending on the country that issued your original license you may have to pass an exam. I read USA license holders must take the exam.

Since now I don’t have to go to an office at the time one usually does this kind of paperwork, I postponed my work to a different time and went there.

I got there at 2 pm. The building is very big, although there are 3 more centers in Fukuoka Prefecture, and it has a course for practical driving tests, which I saw today for the first time since in Spain we only take our practical tests on real streets.

Now picture my face when I was told this: I went to the place where they do this stuff and they told me my documents were OK. But they couldn’t do it today because they only process this from 1 to 1:30 pm, Monday to Friday. I tried to check this time before coming but I guess I failed.

Anyway, I find it quite ridiculous that the building is open and the guys doing this are working, but still they can’t receive this people asking for this stuff except for those 30 minutes a day. So I filled an A4 with my opinion on the subject and put it in the suggestions box. You may be thankful that I forgot to take a picture of this paper. This way you won’t have to see my Japanese handwriting.
