Cartas del Profesor Layton

YouTube

The Professor Layton chewing gum I bought came with some trading cards. Or did the cards come with some gum? By the way did you watch my movie about Professor Layton’s riddle snack?

I have just published in gamerah.com a review for the Nintendo DS game Kousoku Card Battle! Card Hero. The text is all in Spanish, but I took the pictures and the video myself and there’s also a quite personal part in page 2.

Kousoku Card Battle!

Trade & Battle Card Hero has always been a cursed game for me — I love it, but I haven’t beat it yet. When I first bought it for about 300 yen, the cartridge wouldn’t save my game correctly. Some months later I bought another one for 50 yen and it had the same problem. The cartridge has an internal clock which feeds from the same battery as the SRAM, so the battery seems to have a shorter life than that of other games (this game went out in year 2000). This is the same problem that makes it difficult finding a Pokemon Silver / Gold cartridge that still saves correctly.

But on November 22 in Akihabara my fate changed. I found yet another copy of Card Hero for just 20 yen (the plastic cartridge case alone makes it worth already) and I decided to bet on it. After passing the boring tutorial and saving the game, I left the cartridge resting for an entire night and ¡surprise! The following day, the game still remembered me. At last I’ll be able to play until the end!

The game itself is a Game Boy and Game Boy Color trading card game in the fashion of Pokemon Trading Card Game. It was developed at Intelligent Systems and directed by Yoshio Sakamoto (Japanese interview about this game), a veteran game designer whose history includes classics like Balloon Fight or Metroid. And the result is a game with a very polished system. It has no energy or mana cards, and its simple rules will force you to make decisions, and will reward good plays. The only gray spots I can find are: you can’t skip the tutorial, and playing speed is very slow. You’ll spend most of the time waiting for your opponent to play or waiting for your own menu to respond. But the sleek game design and the very nice graphic design, music and story are memorable, so my final grade for this game is: must-have!

There was also a card version, with the same cards as the Game Boy Color version but otherwise unrelated. The problem with the card game is the cards are quite unbalanced in power. This was not a problem in the Game Boy game (well, I guess some people may not like it) but in real cards this translates into an uninteresting metagame in which players can invest lots of money from the beginning, getting many strong cards and effectively skipping weaker cards.

I got my Card Hero cards at a toy store’s closing sale near my home. I bought everything that was left, and ended up with 3 starter sets and some boosters. By the way, the Game Boy game comes with a booster with 3 real cards.

I was quite surprised when Nintendo announced in October that they’d be releasing a new Card Hero game for the Nintendo DS on December 20. The title is Kousoku Card Battle! Card Hero, but you’d already know that if you could read Spanish and you’d be subscribed to the gamerah.com RSS.

Magic: Décima Edición — 第10版 — 10th Edition

Today I’ve been playing Magic: The Gathering for the first time in 9 years. There have been Limited events all around the globe (in Japan too) commemorating the release of Tenth Edition (I stopped playing before 6th was out) and I’ve been playing a Sealed Deck tournament at a local shop in Fukuoka. Of course I didn’t win the tournament, but I got as much fun as I expected.

Magic: Décima Edición — 第10版 — 10th Edition

Every player had to build a deck from the contents of 5 booster packs containing 15 cards each (we borrowed the lands from the shop) and then we played 4 Swiss rounds. I took the picture above when I was choosing the cards for my deck.

Magic: Décima Edición — 第10版 — 10th Edition

And above you can see some of the cards that I opened. 10th Edition boosters have an extra card being a hint/explanation card or a creature token, and next are the 10th Edition lands. Then you can see some useful classics I opened and used: Shock, Incinerate, Icy Manipulator and Bottle Gnomes. And two cards that were especially useful in Limited: Bandage and Lure. The foil card is a commemorative promo Reya Dawnbringer exclusive to this event. Want to buy it from me?
