Comida española hecha por amigos japoneses

On August 4th, the day before my birthday, Takahin and Mahoroba-kun made us Spanish food. It was their first time.

Paella was good. Way better than the one they usually serve at Spanish restaurants in Japan, which would have too much shrimp and too few rice.

Looks like somebody didn’t know you have to turn over the omelet, but susprisingly it didn’t taste like fail. it was good!

They also got us a cake and it said «Happy birthday Alejandro and Ai». Too bad it was only my (Alejandro’s) birthday. But we love how they care about detail (like this) when it’s about surprising friends! Thank you!

La tarta de cumpleaños de Ai

Last Friday it was Ai’s birthday and I went out and bought her a cake in the morning. I searched the web for a cool bakery and rode my bike there. Curiously, I had never been around there. On my way I saw some Totoros.

I also saw a crossing between the highway and the Shinkansen’s rails.

And after more or less 15 minutes, I arrived at the bakery Recette Marina. There were a bunch of people working and everybody greeted me as I was the only customer at that time.

Some hours later, we ate the cake. It was delicious! Ai was very happy.

Castela, ¿bizcocho japonés? — Castella, Japanese cake?

A co-worker brought «castella» as a present for all. It’s a typical sponge cake from Nagasaki, and it’s well known — at least in Fukuoka. There were three kinds: green tea, chocolate and cheese. Their flavors were softer than their colors and, actually, I wouldn’t be able to tell the cheese or chocolate ones apart from a Spanish sponge cake.

castella

The interesting part is, this cake was brought to Nagasaki (the only international harbor in Japan at that time) by Portuguese missionaries during the 16th century. Pão de Castela means «bread from Castilla» in Portuguese, and Castilla was one of the realms which eventually formed Spain. This probably means that the recipe originated in Spain or in one of the colonies Spain had at that time.

Christmas cake

Yesterday we went to a huge shopping Mall in order to find a cake we could eat for Christmas Eve. The Japanese are used to having the «Christmas cake», which is actually any cake they have on Christmas Eve. Maybe it’s only in Spain that we don’t have this?
We also had the turrón my parents sent us, which is a typical Spanish Christmas almond-based sweet, so we were completely satisfied last night.
And just one more thing — we were both working today! It’s not a holiday in Japan.

la tarta de navidad

On the pic you can see our living room isn’t quite tidy. But we’re happy to have finished a whole year at this new home. And it has been a great year, too!
At the end of the night, I sang a Christmas song I had written for Ai, but I still can’t remember the lyrics very well because I wrote them the same morning. Nett weight: 1 minute, 26 seconds.
And I got a very cute purple sweater from Ai, which I’m wearing right now (not on the picture).
