Ehōmaki Setsubun 2011

Yesterday was Setsubun, and like every year we had this thick sushi roll called ehōmaki.

It wasn’t as epic as the ones we got last year, but we did enjoy them.

The direction to look at while you’re eating the ehōmaki this year was south-southeast. And when we got home we did some soy bean throwing as well.

Espaguetis que parecen ramen

We’re getting the hang of the silicone steamer we got from Yuko and family, so we tried to make this «Japanese style mushroom pasta» recipe that was in the book. It was the first time I saw pasta with soup so I was a bit shocked, but it looks like the recipe is just this way.

It’s very easy to make. Just microwave pasta for one person in the silicone steamer (probably cut the pasta in half) with 200 cc water for 3.5 minutes, then mix it so it doesn’t stick, add 100 cc water, microwave for 2.5 minutes more, then add mushrooms (any kind), bacon, a little butter and 150 cc mentsuyu (the sauce you dip somen and cold soba and udon in) and microwave for 2 minutes. Serve, spill nori on it and eat.

Shockingly – the most similar thing to a bowl of ramen I’ve ever seen. But the taste was much softer because of the mentsuyu. You can get better pasta by boiling it in water, but making it this way will have the pasta take in more flavor. It was yummy and easy to make, so I’d recommend it to any silicone steamer owner who can get hold of some mentsuyu!

Pan de arándanos y nueces

Today I’ translating for you a post from my friend Yuko’s blog Omo ni Pan ga Suki («I mainly like bread»). She posts lots of food and baby pictures, so I thought if you like pepinismo you might like this too.

I finally got around to bake the cranberry, raisins and walnuts buns I prepared the other night.

Taken with permission from Omopan

These are small buns slowly baked with little yeast. For the dough I used 225 grams Haru yo Koi flour, and 25 grams integral flour. Haru yo Koi is delicious!
Then I mixed in 20 grams each cranberries and raisins, and 15 grams walnuts.
I cut them slightly and put some cinnamon sugar and butter there. The cut ended up spreading beautifully!
Shio was very excited sitting in front of the freshly baked buns.

¡No se toca!

No touching!

Lately, she’ll try to reach anything she finds interesting. If you tell her she can’t touch that, sometimes she’ll complain by crying… She’s getting better at expressing her feelings.

Soba de nochevieja hecho a mano

About two years ago, I had the chance to have hand-made soba from Ai’s father. And maybe you already knew that Japan celebrates the new year eating soba.

So we welcomed 2011 with hand-made soba, of course. In the video below you can see how it was done from the beginning.

And below are some pictures of all steps.

¿Os gustaría hacer soba a mano alguna vez?

Would you like to make soba by hand some time? They took me to do this once the first time I was in Japan, and I had a very good time with a lot of families and kids, but last time was most instructive!

Refresco de sandía

In the spirit of our successful Pepsi Ice Cucumber video, today we introduce watermelon soda!
